Jeff Sessions: Chronic pain sufferers should ‘take an aspirin and tough it out’

During an address at the U.S. Attorney’s office in Tampa, Florida this week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that people who suffer from chronic pain should simply “take an aspirin and tough it out.”
Sessions, whose opposition to medical marijuana is well known, attempted to tackle the subject of opioid addiction in the U.S., saying pharmaceutical companies are prescribing “too many opioids” — a sentiment that people from across the political spectrum would agree with.
But Sessions’ next statement demonstrated a profound misunderstanding and oversimplification of chronic pain sufferers.
“People need to take some aspirin sometimes and tough it out,” he said according to the Tampa Bay Times. “You can get through these things.”
Speaking to Tampa Bay Times, Academy of Integrative Pain Management executive director Bob Twillman said that Sessions’ comments prove that the Trump administration knows nothing about the subject of chronic pain.
“That remark reflects a failure to recognize the severity of pain of some patients,” Twillman said. “It’s an unconscionable remark. It further illustrates how out of touch parts of the administration are with opioids and pain management.”
In a speech at the Heritage Foundation this week, Sessions blamed the opioid crisis partly on marijuana in a rehash of the old ‘pot is a gateway drug’ theory.

“The DEA said that a huge percentage of the heroin addiction starts with prescriptions. That may be an exaggerated number; they had it as high as 80 percent,” Sessions said. “We think a lot of this is starting with marijuana and other drugs too.”While people’s first illicit drug is often marijuana, researchers have cautioned that there’s no solid evidence that marijuana use causes harder drug use. It’s possible, instead, that people use pot before other drugs simply because marijuana is more accessible than other illegal substances; after all, many people’s first drugs are alcohol or tobacco, which are both legal (for adults) and relatively easy to get, and we don’t assume that will lead to heroin use.

WATCH: ATTORNEY GENERAL JEFF SESSIONS SAYS HIS GOAL FOR 2018 IS TO SEE A FURTHER DECLINE IN PRESCRIPTIONS OF OPIOIDS, AND SAYS, “WE THINK A LOT OF THIS IS STARTING WITH MARIJUANA AND OTHER DRUGS.”

    Mr. Sessions:
How dare you say such a mean, nasty comment. If you had an ounce of the pain chronic pain many people experience in a day you would never be the miserable man. I knew you were a racist bigot but, I never thought a Christian (as you claim to be) could be downright evil too.

I am one of those chronic pain patients that just need to “take an aspirin and tough it out”. I have had eight back and neck surgeries, two broken hips, several broken wrists, etc. and I am allergic to aspirin. What do you prescribe now Dr Sessions?

I think your punishment of innocent children was as mean as a person could be but I guess that wasn’t low enough for you so now you feel it necessary to berate the disabled.

When Michelle Obama said, “When they go low, we go high”. Apparently, we don’t have to go too high as you are a person who has obviously gone as low as one can go!

It is now easier to get pot than my prescription Adderall XR! With the DEA and the pharmaceutical companies and the pharmacies and the insurance companies have made it almost impossible for an adult to get this medication for themselves. Every time I have to get a prescription filled it is so stressful for me I cannot believe how hard they have made it. If they don’t think we really need these medications, and they need to be afflicted with the diseases and the pain and ADD that we have. I was diagnosed with ADD and dyslexia at 49 years old. Looking back, my whole childhood now makes so much sense. I am a smart woman, and ADD has really taken it’s toll.
I will be fighting and a higher level with Congress and the DEA you will be hearing from me thank you

Sessions, you are a ding bat. Marijuana is a plant given to us by God. So if you have a problem with marijuana, you need to have a personal chat with the Big Guy upstairs….

Tough this out, you pseudo-Christian piece of shit! If there really were a God, especially your vengeful, mean POS god, he’d strike your monkey fetus ass dead just for a giggle. I honestly and with all my heart wish severe injury and pain on him, and hope he has to fight to get his relief. I don’t think he’s human, frankly. Anyone who’s experienced pain would condemn such a statement.

I completely agree and would add that my first reaction to his simpering evil comment was to think that he needs to have both knees taken out by a huge man wielding a sledge hammer. Maybe a little chronic pain would be good for him!

Dear Jeff Sessions: You are not a physician. Much less an Attorney General since you appear to have recused yourself from anything except being a pain in the ass to the USA. Resign. Go Home. You should be kicked in the nuts for saying this!!! You must have the good fortune to have perfect health. May it end soon. I mean that. May you have both knees and hips replaced without the aid of modern medicine. May you have crippling arthritis so you can’t sign or pursue anymore laws of any type. May you suffer the indignity of not being able to wipe your own ass because your joints hurt so much. May you not be able to walk up stairs or down stairs because your feet are curled up in pain. May you not be able to hold any insufferable children of your own. You are a sick sick person. You ignorance knows no end.

I highly doubt it bc you don’t want to sit there in pain so let me ask this, WHY SHOULD ANYONE SUFFER IN PAIN!?!? You are a QUACK! I don’t take pills UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY! I manage my pain with WEED and ,et me te.l you it works BETTER than any PILL I have EVER BEEN GIVIN! I have been smoking weed for many years (20 at least) and guess what? Sessions probably doesn’t have any chronic pains because he’s never done any real work, only sucking from the teet of the Federal Government at the expense of us the taxpayers and our tax dollars. Undoubtedly he has never experienced any type of pain or had a family member who did. I experienced several ruptured disc and at another time had neck problems, both resulting in surgery and plates and screws. I never in my life knew that my body could hurt so bad. As you know it destroys your personal and family life and nothing is fun any more. I’m ashamed to admit that I thought for years he was a good person and I have voted for him in the past and now i wonder how i could have been so stupid. I already had this feeling due to his lack of backbone in standing up for the President who appointed him and for what is good for this country. He is a spineless P.O.S. That should have to suffer just half the pain that a lot of Americans suffer every day and he would have the Government doctors give him some meds. Its best not to speak when you are ignorant of the subject..we all understand that there is a problem with drugs but they are not from people suffering from chronic pain. Hopefully doctors will stand up for their patients and the D.E.A. Will do their job and get the illegal dealers. I feel your pain and problems and wish you relief from both. All suffering from this problem need to work together to solve problems like Sessions by voting them out .

You guys do realize he said “Sometimes” right? There is a prescription drug abuse issue. Pharmaceutical companies and ignorant people are the cause. But to co troll some much of someone’s life is just not within the scope of power given to the government.

I hope you, or someone you TRULY care about gets to experience the pain in question. If it were you I am positive you wouldn’t last long enough to say the word aspirin, let alone use it. Since you are supposed to be a Christian, why don’t you pray about it…. Ask for the Lord to let you feel what many feel for 15 minutes….see how long you last…!! You are truly a JOKE!

My husband has chronic pain due to about 6 chronic health conditions- he cannot take aspirin because he lost a kidney to cancer and is at risk for kidney failure now. Tylenol is like candy against the tough pain. he tries not to take the prescription non-opioid medication as much as possible but even that wont remove the pain on his bad days. A bad day is him in pain from sitting, standing, laying, and even breathing. I pray Mr Sessions never has chronic pain and that is family and loved ones never experience it because he has damned them to suffer in pain or to admit that he was a hypocrite and someone unfit to call themselves a loving Christian individual.

Have just had my 5th joint replacement Mr. Sessions. I can’t take anti-inflammatories, I do not take opiods. I have toughed it out until so much damage has been done to those 5 joints that there was no option except total replacement. You apparently don’t understand chronic pain sir and for your sake, I hope you never do!

I wonder if he knows how many people are getting Stage 3 and 4 kidney disease from Nsaids: aspirin, Aleve, Ibuprofen?

Perhaps he should visit a hospital and find out.

I can tell you’ve never been in chronic pain in your life. I live a life in constant pain where opioids don’t even touch the pain. For your remark to “take an aspirin and tough it out”, honestly makes me sick. Not only am I sick physically but you are from my state and are representing it horribly. I’m shocked at your words with zero compassion.

So I am NOT a fan of Sessions at all, so I decided to watch the entire address to see for myself.

He did NOT say anything about CHRONIC pain sufferers. The headline is fake news and an effort to create more panic.

He was talking about after surgery and was joking about how General Kelly refused to take drugs after surgery. This link even cut out the full context of the video to prove their fake story.

Not to defend the pharma companies, who have their own complicity in this, but the statement that the companies “prescribe too many opioids” is false. I always thought it was DOCTORS who prescribed medications, not drug companies Not sure if this is Sessions’ error or that of the person who wrote the story, but if people “across the political statement can agree with that statement, we’re in bigger trouble than I thought.

And yes, I’ll add to the chorus: Mr. Sessions, spend a day in my shoes and you couldn’t hack it.

I have had two lumbar back surgeries with discectomy and laminectomy. Then my arm hurt all the time and I ended up getting 7 more surgeries on my neck with titanium hardware. Before I even got out of the operating room, something heavy enough to break a titanium screw was dropped in my head. When I woke up in a tiny little room, I had two broken teethe, two black eyes and a split lip. I felt like If been hit by an 18 wheeler. Now, you want to take my pain medication and leave me unable to function, as in take care of myself and my 14 year old service dog?? This is insanity…
